HOW MANY CUSHIONS DO YOU NEED?

The Suffolk Nest Cushion Guide

From armchairs to corner sofa, here's my simple guide to choosing the right number, size and combination of cushions for your space.

A question that comes up time and time again is, "how many cushions should I have on my sofa?".

The truth is, much like floristry, there are no rules. It largely comes down to personal preference as well as the size of your furniture, how you use the space, and the look you're trying to create.

But, if you're looking for a simple starting point, I've put together some of my favourite combinations that I return to time and time again.

I hope this gives you the confidence to achieve a balanced, layered look that's both beautiful and practical.

Before You Start - Three-step Checklist

  • 1. Consider the furniture

Are you styling an armchair, a loveseat, a sofa, or a corner sofa? The size will determine how many cushions you'll need.

  • 2. Think about colour

If your sofa is neutral, cushions are a wonderful way to introduce warmth, pattern and personality.

If your sofa already has colour and/or pattern, consider using cushions that complement, rather than compete.

  • 3. Shapes & textures

The most interesting cushion schemes often combine:

    • Different sizes
    • Different textures
    • Pattern and plain fabrics
    • Embroidery, and print

This helps to create a layered look often seen in professionally styled interiors.

Armchair

A single rectangular cushion is often all that's needed for an armchair.

It adds comfort without overwhelming the chair and it's perfect for introducing a touch of pattern or colour.

Loveseat/Snuggle Chair

My favourite combination for a loveseat is one 50x50cm square cushion paired with a 35x50cm rectangular cushion layered infront.

2 Seater Sofa

For smaller sofas, three cushions create balance without making the seating feel crowded.

I typically style two 50x50cm squares with one 35x50cm rectangle layered infront of one of the squares.

3 Seater Sofa

A 3 seater sofa is where layered really begins to shine.

Three square 50x50cm cushions paired with one 35x50cm rectangular cushion creates a beautifully balanced arrangement that remains practical for everyday living.

4 Seater Sofa

This is my most recommended combination.

Four 50x50cm squares paired with a single 35x50cm rectangular cushion creates that relaxed, luxurious look often seen in country homes and boutique hotels.

4 Seater Corner Sofa

For corner sofas, I like to create a focal point in the middle with 3 cushions, and then style either end in additional cushions . This combination usually feels just right.

5 Seater Corner Sofa

Larger corner sofas can comfortably accomodate up to seven cushions. I like to use six 50x50cm squares and one 35x50cm rectangle.

This combination creates a warmth, softness and visual balance across the entire sofa.
