Discover the perfect Christmas centrepiece for all your festive celebrations with our step-by-step guide to creating our seasonal footed bowl arrangement
Select your ingredients
At Christmas, the table centrepiece is one of the most important parts of our décor – we spend a lot of time as a family sat around the dining table, after all.
This year, I’ve created a design in our versatile footed bowl that uses some of the evergreen foliage that feels so festive as well as more unusual stems that subtly reference the red tones and cool blues that dominate this time of year while still offering a fresh take on traditional arrangements.
This Christmas centrepiece is beautifully rustic, joyful, and perfect for a celebration.
For this arrangement, you’ll need:
- Pine branches
- Conifer branches
- Rosehip branches
- Viburnum stems
- Eryngium stems
- Hellebore stems
Create a strong base
To keep your centrepiece secure throughout the festive season, you’ll need to prepare your footed bowl first. This vessel is ideal for group gatherings as it’s the perfect height, making an impression yet still allowing conversation to flow across the table. To hold the stems in place, I create a pillow of chicken wire. Aim to make it around three or four layers deep (to sit comfortably in the bowl) or use a flower flog or angel vine instead. I then make sure the wire won’t slip with some pot tape arranged in a cross shape. The colour of the tape you use is completely up to you as it’ll be entirely covered by your foliage and stems. Add some water and then you’re ready to start arranging.
Shape with foliage
Now it’s time to create your structure. I recommend using your foliage to do this as it provides a clear shape for your florals to slot into later. For this Christmas centrepiece, I start with pine and conifer branches. You can work face on to make things easier and start with the central branch, which will dictate the height of your centrepiece, before moving out to the edges. Don’t worry if some of your branches fall over the edge of the bowl but remember, you want your arrangement to be visually arresting but not so tall and wide that it makes seeing the other guests impossible!
Add seasonal stems
Next, time for the fun bit! Start adding colour with stems that nod to the festive season. I suggest placing the smallest flowers at the top of your arrangement and the larger blooms near the base. I think bold Eryngium stems look fantastic in the centre and towards the base of your display, providing a beautiful contrast to the soft blush tones of Hellebore stems, while our Rosehips bring the volume and dried Viburnum make the perfect accent piece.
Place as your Christmas centrepiece
Now, you can place it on your dining table and enjoy throughout the Christmas period. Ideally, it should last at least five to seven days, especially if it’s not displayed next to a radiator. To keep it looking its best, I would change the water regularly, even every day if you can, and store it in a cooler spot in your home when you’re not sat at the table.
