The Story Behind Our Cushion Collection

Table of Contents

When we first launched The Suffolk Nest, I never imagined I’d one day be designing our very own collection of cushion covers.

For years, our customers have welcomed our faux flowers, wreaths and home décor into their homes, styling them on coffee tables, console tables and mantelpieces.

The idea for a cushion collection had been sitting in the background for a long time. I knew that if we were ever going to create cushions, they had to feel unmistakably Suffolk Nest. They had to tell a story, reflect the landscape that inspires me every day, and be designed with the same attention to detail that goes into every stem, vase and wreath we create.

    Inspired by Suffolk

Living in Suffolk, inspiration is never hard to find.

The collection began with three colours that felt deeply connected to the place I call home.

Tide was inspired by our beautiful coastline. Soft, timeless and calming, it reflects the ever-changing blues and greys of the Suffolk coast, from Aldeburgh to Southwold.

Orchard was an obvious choice. Green has become synonymous with The Suffolk Nest over the years, and this shade captures the colour of our gardens, hedgerows and countryside throughout the changing seasons.

Thatch was inspired by the character and charm of Suffolk itself. The warm tones of traditional thatched cottages, golden fields and winding country lanes all found their way into this colour palette.

These three colours became the foundation of the collection, helping us create something that felt cohesive, timeless and easy to style within the home.

    Patterns with a Story

Once the colours were established, we turned our attention to the designs themselves.

Many of the motifs throughout the collection draw inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds us every day. Walking through Suffolk’s countryside, you’ll find hedgerows bursting with texture, movement and delicate detail. Throughout the seasons they constantly evolve, creating endless inspiration for pattern and form.

Alongside nature, I have always been fascinated by the beautiful architecture scattered across our county. Historic houses, intricate stonework, decorative detailing and traditional craftsmanship all influenced the geometric and embroidered patterns found throughout the collection.

Every design started as a sketch, often inspired by something I’d spotted during a walk, a visit to a historic property, or even a photograph I’d taken months before and saved away for future inspiration.

    Bringing the Designs to Life

One of the most rewarding parts of this journey was partnering with a wonderful family-run manufacturer in India. They specialise in traditional screen printing and intricate embroidery techniques, combining generations of craftsmanship with exceptional attention to detail. Working together allowed us to bring our designs to life in a way that honoured the original artwork. The embroidery adds depth and texture, while the screen printing techniques help preserve the hand-drawn character of each design.

Throughout the process, countless samples travelled back and forth as we refined colours, finalised trims, adjusted embroidery details and perfected every finish.

    The Art of Refinement

What many people don’t see is how much happens behind the scenes before a collection ever reaches your home.

There were countless colour swatches, design revisions and sample rounds. Some patterns evolved dramatically from their original sketches, while others were simplified to ensure they worked beautifully alongside the rest of the collection.

The biggest challenge wasn’t creating individual cushion designs. It was creating a cohesive collection. I wanted every cushion cover to work beautifully on its own, but more importantly, I wanted them to work together. Whether you prefer a more minimal look or love layering patterns and textures, each design was created to complement the others effortlessly.

This is where our three anchoring colours became so important. By building the collection around Tide, Orchard and Thatch, we were able to create cushions that can be mixed, matched and layered with confidence.

    Designed to Be Collected

For me, the most exciting part of the collection is how versatile it is.

Rather than creating cushions that feel fixed to one room or one style, we designed each piece to become part of a larger collection. A geometric embroidery can sit alongside a floral print. A richly textured design can be paired with a simpler woven piece. The colours flow naturally between one another, making it easy to create a look that feels personal and considered. It’s a collection designed to evolve with your home.

A New Chapter for The Suffolk Nest

This collection represents something very special for us.

It’s our first step into designing and creating our own soft furnishings, but it remains rooted in everything The Suffolk Nest has always stood for: thoughtful design, timeless style and products inspired by the beauty of the world around us.

Every cushion cover in this collection tells a small part of that story, from the Suffolk landscapes that inspired the colours to the skilled artisans who helped bring the designs to life.

I couldn’t be more excited to finally share it with you.
