A step-by-step guide to creating beautifully balanced arrangements at home
There’s something truly special about a well-balanced floral arrangement. It has the power to transform a space, draw the eye, and bring a sense of calm, beauty and intention into your home.
With a few simple principles and a thoughtful approach, you can create arrangements that feel natural, effortless and professionally styled every single time.
Understanding the Building Blocks of an Arrangement
Before you begin, it’s important to understand the three key elements that make up a well-balanced arrangement:
1. Foliage (Your Foundation)
Foliage creates the base structure of your arrangement. It provides shape, movement and a natural framework for your flowers to sit within.
Think of foliage as the skeleton of your arrangement.
Examples: Eucalyptus, olive, fern, grass

2. Focal Flowers (Your Statement)
These are your showstoppers - the ones that draw the eye and give your arrangement its character. They tend to be larger, more detailed, and are used more sparingly.
Examples:
Peonies, hydrangeas, roses, dahlias, tulips, ranunculus

3. Filler Flowers (Your Softening Layer)
Filler flowers add lightness, texture and movement. They help to break up the focal blooms and make the arrangement feel more natural and organic.
Examples: Waxflower, sweetpea, blossom, white willow

Step 1: Choose the Right Vase
This is often overlooked, but it’s one of the most fundamentally important parts of the process. Your vase sets the tone for the entire arrangement.
- Consider scale: A large vase on a small coffee table will feel out of proportion, whereas smaller vases and pots are perfect for more intimate spaces.
- Think about placement: Larger vases work beautifully on console tables, kitchen islands or dining tables where they can create a statement.
- Neck opening matters: The wider the opening, the more stems you’ll need to create a full, balanced look.
- Colour and finish: Choose a vase that complements both your stems and your interior, it should feel cohesive within the space.

Step 2: Work to the Right Proportions
As a general rule of thumb, your arrangement should be around 1.5 times the height of your vase and 3 times the width. There are obviously circumstances where this wouldn’t apply, but I find this tip often gives people confidence as a starting point. It helps to create a sense of balance and ensures the arrangement feels intentional rather than top-heavy or underwhelming.
Step 3: Prepare Your Stems
Before placing anything into the vase, take 30 seconds to prepare your stems - this simple step makes all the difference.
- Gently fluff out the stems to open them up
- Separate and shape side shoots to add volume
- Bend stems slightly to create a more natural, organic feel
This not only adds fullness, but it also helps faux stems look incredibly realistic.
Step 4: Build Your Base with Foliage
Start with your foliage to create the structure of your arrangement.
- Bend the stems to a height that feels well balanced with your vase
- For faux stems, don’t be afraid to bend them back on themselves, it makes arranging much easier
- Cross stems over within the vase to create a supportive base
At this stage, your arrangement should feel light, airy and textural, with space ready for your florals to nestle into.
Step 5: Add Your Focal Flowers
Now it’s time to introduce your statement blooms. The key here is variation and balance:
- Place flowers at different heights and angles
- Avoid creating straight lines or symmetry
- Let one bloom gently lean over the edge of the vase
- Position another slightly taller, off to one side
- Space the remaining blooms naturally throughout
Make sure the flower heads aren’t overcrowded, each one should have room to breathe.
Step 6: Layer in Your Filler Flowers
Filler flowers bring everything together.
- Nestle them in around your focal blooms
- Use them to soften the overall look and add movement
This is where your arrangement starts to feel truly natural and effortless.
Step 7: Step Back and Refine
One of the most important habits to develop is stepping back regularly.
Take a moment to assess:
- Are there any visible gaps?
- Does the shape feel balanced?
- Is there a natural flow from every angle?
- Are the flowers and vase working in harmony?
Small adjustments here can completely elevate the final result.
A Note on Faux Flowers
One of the biggest advantages of working with faux stems is the flexibility they offer.
You can bend, reshape and reposition them as many times as you like until you achieve the perfect arrangement - something that simply isn’t possible with fresh flowers. It also means your arrangement will look just as beautiful weeks, months, and even years later.

Final Thoughts
Arranging flowers beautifully isn’t about perfection, it’s about creating something that feels natural, balanced and considered. Start with the right foundations, take your time, and trust your eye. With a little practice, you’ll begin to develop your own style, and in my opinion, that’s when the real magic really happens.
