HOW MANY CUSHIONS DO YOU NEED?

The Cushion Guide

There are no strict rules when it comes to cushions. The right number depends on your sofa, your space and the look you love. But a few simple principles make all the difference between a sofa that looks thrown together and one that looks beautifully styled. Here’s exactly how I dress a sofa, from an armchair to a corner sofa.

THE ESSENTIALS

Three things to consider

Your Furniture

The size of your sofa or chair decides how many cushions you need, from one on an armchair to seven on a large corner sofa.

Your Colours

Neutral sofas suit warmth and pattern. Patterned sofas suit cushions that complement, not compete.

The Mix

Combine sizes, textures and patterns: something textured, something patterned and something plain, finished with a rectangle in front.

Cushion Layouts for Every Sofa

Armchair

A single rectangular cushion is often all that's needed for an armchair.

It adds comfort without overwhelming the chair and it's perfect for introducing a touch of pattern or colour.

Loveseat/Snuggle Chair

My favourite combination for a loveseat is one 50x50cm square cushion paired with a 35x50cm rectangular cushion layered infront.

2 Seater Sofa

For smaller sofas, three cushions create balance without making the seating feel crowded.

I typically style two 50x50cm squares with one 35x50cm rectangle layered infront of one of the squares.

3 Seater Sofa

A 3 seater sofa is where layered really begins to shine.

Three square 50x50cm cushions paired with one 35x50cm rectangular cushion creates a beautifully balanced arrangement that remains practical for everyday living.

4 Seater Sofa

This is my most recommended combination.

Four 50x50cm squares paired with a single 35x50cm rectangular cushion creates that relaxed, luxurious look often seen in country homes and boutique hotels.

4 Seater Corner Sofa

For corner sofas, I like to create a focal point in the middle with 3 cushions, and then style either end in additional cushions . This combination usually feels just right.

5 Seater Corner Sofa

Larger corner sofas can comfortably accomodate up to seven cushions. I like to use six 50x50cm squares and one 35x50cm rectangle.

This combination creates a warmth, softness and visual balance across the entire sofa.

Your Questions, Answered

As a guide: two squares and a rectangle on a 2-seater, three squares and a rectangle on a 3-seater, and four squares and a rectangle on a 4-seater. See our layouts above for every sofa size.

Our duck feather inners are complimentary when you choose two or more covers, including every cushion set. You can also buy our inners separately.

Our inners are intentionally bigger. A larger inner fills every corner for a full, plump, generous shape. We pair 50 × 50cm covers with 60 × 60cm inners, and 35 × 50cm covers with 40 × 60cm inners.
